* Use r.colors.quantiles to create raster colors rules based on n-quantiles. It uses the R and the spgrass6 package.
* Use r.colors.out_sld to export GRASS raster colors rules in OGC SLD template v1.0.0 XML format for Geoserver and the ilk
* Use r.colors.out_vtk to export GRASS raster colors rules for use with VTK-based visualization software.
Using GRASS color palettes in QGIS
Most of them can already be found there, you just have to hunt for them. In the raster layer properties window's style tab, select "Singleband pseudocolor" as the type, "Generate new color map", "New color ramp", for ramp type choose "cpt-city", change to the "Sort by Author" tab, and look for "grass". They can also be found in the QGIS section cpt-city's QGIS theme.

If there's a new set of color rules which are not in QGIS, you can prepare a .svg palette file for use with QGIS using the following commands. Consider to then open a ticket in the QGIS issue tracker asking them to add it (and attach the file of course to save someone some work :)

You will need the cptsvg command line tool from cptutils and the GRASS 6 addon module .

Examples:
<source lang="bash">
g.region n=100 s=0 w=0 e=100 res=1
r.mapcalc "dummy = row()"

r.colors dummy color=roygbiv
r.out.gmt dummy out=roygbiv
rm roygbiv.grd
cptsvg --geometry=300x45 -o roygbiv.svg -v roygbiv.cpt

r.colors dummy rules=~/grass/svn/grass-addons/grass6/raster/r.colors.tools/palettes/palette_sst.gcolors
r.out.gmt dummy out=palette_sst
rm palette_sst.grd
cptsvg --geometry=300x45 -o palette_sst.svg -v palette_sst.cpt
</source>

You can then copy the resulting .svg file into <tt>/usr/share/qgis/resources/cpt-city-qgis-min/grass/</tt> on Linux (or <tt>C:\Program&nbsp;Files\QGIS&nbsp;VERSION\apps\qgis\resources\cpt-city-qgis-min\grass\</tt> on MS Windows).

Another solution to export raster color tables is to slightly tweak the output of r.colors.out, in order to provide QGIS with a regular color chart source file. It might be handy when dealing with maps produced by r.composite, i.e. unregistered color charts. The example bellow may be adapted to ones needs (here the alpha channel defaults to 255):
<source lang="bash">
r.colors.out map=my_raster rules=~/in.colors
cat in.colors|sed 's/:/,/'g|sed 's/ /,/'g|awk 'BEGIN {FS=",";OFS=","};{print $1,$2,$3,$4,255,$1}'>out.colors
</source>

Loading QGIS color palettes into GRASS
The GRASS GIS addon module can be used after the svgx command line program from the <tt>cptutils</tt> package, using GMT's .cpt color table format as a go-between:

<source lang="bash">
svgx --output dkbluered.cpt --type cpt /usr/share/qgis/resources/cpt-city-qgis-min/h5/dkbluered.svg
r.cpt2grass in=dkbluered.cpt output=dkbluered.gcolors
</source>

You can then use the *.gcolors file with the r.colors rules= option (or set the color rules directly from the r.cpt2grass module).

GRASS GIS is still lacking a relevant, well tempered graphical identity. Some proposals are being discussed especially to design a new splash screen (and welcome banner). The full thread is there.
Graphics
January 2015‎:

GRASS official logo (also here) is a great starting point, as it has been here for ...ever?
Given the original vector file is somewhat irregular (twisted diamond, doubled vertices in grass, overlapping shapes) a cleaned light version is proposed.
: Background info: the logo was re-vectorized by Markus Neteler in 1998 from a rasterized master file (for his master thesis)

For consistency, it is important to use this logo as is, i.e. not being tempted to distort it by any trick (shadows, bump mapping, blur, differential rescaling,...).

Itemisation should be limited to:<br />
* black (and grayscale) version;

* white version, in case it should appear over a dark background/image.

Tagline
The historical one was : «The world's leading open source GIS». Several slogans were recently proposed:

- «Bringing advanced geospatial technologies to the world»;
- «Advanced geospatial technology for everyone»;
- «Opening advanced geospatial technologies to the world».
- ...

Colors
A grass <span style="color:#009000">green...</span>
The basic green color is defined as follows:

- 0,144,0 (rgb);
- 100,100,44 (cmyk);
- #009000 (html).

alpha channel is set to 1 (no transparency)

...and a <span style="color:#909090">grayscale</span> tone
When required, a grayscale transposition is applied to green:

*either it is an opaque grey:
- 144,144,144 (rgb);
- 0,0,0,44 (cmyk);
- #909090 (html),

*or it is multiplied over background, with alpha transparency:
- 0,0,0,111 (rgba);
- 0,0,0,100,44 (cmyk);
- #0000006f (html).

The white version may as well be declined in opaque or transparent, then green is replaced with translucent white:
- 255,255,255,111 (rgba);
- 0,0,0,0,44 (cmyk);
- #ffffff6f (html).

Typo
The logo can come with text. It uses two fonts. To comply with GRASS GIS license these must be open source fonts.

Main font
GRASS GIS name, capitalized or not. Composed either in Fira Sans, or in Alegreya Sans. It makes sense to confront a modern sans serif typeface, preferably rather light, to a very classical Garamond. Changing GRASS GIS to lowercase is discussed, my opinion is GRASS initials usage turned them into an acronym (we pronounce it), which does not need to be full-capitalized, except the first letter.

Secondary font
This typeface is used to display additional text, such as a motto or tagline. It is composed in EB Garamond, a font designed by Georg Duffner, inspired by the famous historical typeface drawn hundreds of years ago by Claude Garamond. It is freely available, under the terms of the SIL Open Fonts License (ofl).

Applications
GRASS GIS Splash screen
Objective
Please refer to this thread

Proposals
After several tests, we put things together in an array:
- col 1: capitalized title, fontface Alegreya Sans, text and tagline beside logotype;
- col 2: partially lowercased, fontface Fira Sans, stacked centered layout;
- col 3: lowercase title, fontface Fira Sans, flushright/flushleft positioning.

- row A: white background, potential thin black border;
- row B: metaphoric background image (to be refined, potential restricted rights), white graphics+lettering;
- row C: 3d composition showing a virtual grassy world map, white graphics+lettering;
- row D: same sort of scene but in top view, on white or transparent background;
- row E: grayscale grassy world, black and green graphics+lettering;
- row F: personal image, less iconic than decorative in truth...

GRASS GIS Welcome banner
The welcome banner is the image displayed on top of the Welcome frame that pops up when launching GRASS. This image, if present, should be coherent with the graphic design, especially with the splash screen.

Proposals
The following three banners go respectively with columns 1, 2, 3 of the array above.

GRASS GIS sticker
Objective
GRASS GIS users may need to display a short information about the use of the software in their projects. It might be useful to propose a normalized sticker for that.

Proposals
Usually these tags are composed with freehand lettering, we propose this sticker:

But one can prefer keeping close to the more sober identity and compose the slogan in garamond:

The following graphics could be used on map compositions:

Additional (derived) graphics are gathered in this array:

⚠️Vincent: added a brief section describing how to use gdal Rasterlite driver

Spatialite
A SQLite database with geospatial extensions, much list PostGIS is to PostgreSQL. To export a vector map layer to a Spatialite database with v.out.ogr, use the SQLite OGR driver and set the SPATIALITE data creation option to "yes". Raster can be exported to a Spatialite database with r.out.gdal, using the Rasterlite format driver.
Vector maps
New database
v.out.ogr in=mymap output=mydbase.sqlite format=SQLite \
type=area dsco='SPATIALITE=yes' output_layer="mymap"

Existing spatialite database
Note that you need to use --overwrite, otherwise v.out.ogr will complain that the output already exists. Using --overwrite should maintain the existing tables in the spatialite database. However, it is strongly suggested to run this on a copy of the database, or make sure you have a recent backup.

v.out.ogr -u in=mymap output=mydbase.sqlite format=SQLite \
type=area dsco='SPATIALITE=yes' output_layer="mymap" --overwrite

Using QGIS (1)
An alternate way is to load the layer in QGIS's GRASS toolbox, then right click on the layer name and select "Save As...".

Using QGIS (2)
Open the layer in QGIS using the browser panel. Next, open the spatialite database in the QGIS DB manager and use the 'import layer' option to import the grass vector layer you just opened in QGIS into the spatialite database.

Raster maps
Given an existing <var>mydbase.sqlite</var> file, and a Byte type rastermap <var>myraster</var>, invoking the following command will incorporate myraster to mydbase.sqlite as a LZW compressed PNG image :
r.out.gdal input=myraster output="RASTERLITE:mydbase.sqlite,table=myraster" format=Rasterlite type=Byte createopt="DRIVER=PNG,COMPRESSION=LZW"
For more information on the Rasterlite driver, have a look a gdal documentation.

Note: the GDAL Rasterlite driver does not implement the SetProjection() method, thus srid value in the geometry_columns table will be set to -1 instead of a valid srid (12345 in the following example). You'll probably have to set it manually within the database:
spatialite mydbase.sqlite
.head on
select srid from geometry_columns where f_table_name='myraster_metadata';
update geometry_columns set srid=12345 where f_table_name='myraster_metadata';
.exit
GRASS official logo is a great starting point, as it has been here for ...ever?
Given the original vector file is somewhat irregular (twisted diamond, doubled vertices in grass, overlapping shapes) a cleaned light version is proposed.
Typo
The logo can come with text. It uses two fonts. To comply with GRASS GIS license these must be open source fonts.

GRASS GIS sticker
Objective
GRASS GIS users may need to display a short information about the use of the software in their projects. It might be useful to propose a normalized sticker for that.

Proposals
Usually these tags are composed with freehand lettering, we propose this sticker:

But one can prefer keeping close to the more sober identity and compose the slogan in garamond:

The following graphics could be used on map compositions:

Selected startup banner
On Feb 6, 2015 (commit 64480 the banner was uploaded to the source code. Related files:
GRASS is still lacking a relevant, well tempered graphical identity. Some proposals are being discussed especially to design a new splash screen (and welcome banner). The full thread is there.
Graphics
GRASS official logo is a great starting point, as it has been here for ...ever?
Given the original vector file is somewhat irregular (twisted diamond, doubled vertices in grass, overlapping shapes) a cleaned light version is proposed.
: Background info: the logo was redigitized by MN in 1998 from a raster master.

For consistency, it is important to use this logo as is, i.e. not being tempted to distort it by any trick (shadows, bump mapping, blur, differential rescaling,...).

Itemisation should be limited to:<br />
* black (and grayscale) version;

The historical one was : «The world's leading open source GIS». Several slogans were recently proposed:

- «Bringing advanced geospatial technologies to the world»;
- «Advanced geospatial technology for everyone»;
- «Opening advanced geospatial technologies to the world».
The basic green color is defined as follows:

- 0,144,0 (rgb);
- 100,100,44 (cmyk);
- #009000 (html).

aplha channel is set to 1 (no transparency)

...and a <span style="color:#909090">grayscale</span> tone
When required, a grayscale transposition is applied to green:

*either it is an opaque grey:
- 144,144,144 (rgb);
- 0,0,0,44 (cmyk);
- #909090 (html),

*or it is multiplied over background, with alpha transparency:
- 0,0,0,111 (rgba);
- 0,0,0,100,44 (cmyk);
- #0000006f (html).

The white version may as well be declined in opaque or transparent, then green is replaced with translucent white:
- 255,255,255,111 (rgba);
- 0,0,0,0,44 (cmyk);

- #0000006f (html).

- raw C: 3d composition showing a virtual grassy world map, white graphics+lettering;
- raw D: same sort of scene but in top view, on white or transparent background;

- col 1: capitalized title, fontface Alegreya Sans, text and tagline beside logotype;
- col 2: partially lowercased, fontface Fira Sans, stacked centered layout;
- col 3: lowercase title, fontface Fira Sans, flushright/flushleft positioning.

- raw A: white background, potential thin black border;
- raw B: metaphoric background image (to be refined, potential restricted rights), white graphics+lettering;
- raw C: 3d composition showing a virtual grassy world map, white graphics+lettering;
- raw D: the same image in grayscale, black and green graphics+lettering;
- raw E: personal image, less iconic than decorative in truth...

GRASS GIS Welcome banner
The welcome banner is the image displayed on top of the Welcome frame that pops up when launching GRASS. This image, if present, should be coherent with the graphic design, especially with the splash screen.

Proposals
The type of banner that will be taken on depends on the choice of the splash screen. The idea is to maintain a graphical coherence.
GRASS GIS name, capitalized. Composed in Fontin regular, with a slightly negative approach. This font is designed by Jos Buivenga, and is free.
Comment by ML: this seems to be free as in free beer, but not as in free speech (no distribution allowed. For an OSGeo project such as GRASS, I would prefer a really free font.

Yes, I agree. Not that easy to find a fully developed font family (lots of ugly things in fact...). Let's have a look at this project. It makes sense to confront a modern sans serif typeface, preferably light, to a very classical Garamond. See below tests number 5 and 6. Changing GRASS GIS to lowercase was done on purpose, my opinion is GRASS initials usage turned the word into an acronym, which does not need to be capitalized.

The Fira Sans is a nice clean font. GRASS IS an acronym of course (geographic resource analysis support system), but the lower case is fine after all these years and indeed looks good.

For consistency, it is important to use this logo as is, i.e. not being tempted to distort it by any trick (shadows, bump mapping, blur, differential rescaling,...).

Itemisation should be limited to:<br />
* black (and grayscale) version;

Tagline
The historical one was : «The world's leading open source GIS». Several slogans were recently proposed:

- «Bringing advanced geospatial technologies to the world»;
- «Advanced geospatial technology for everyone»;
- «Opening advanced geospatial technologies to the world».
When required, a grayscale transposition is applied to green:

*either it is an opaque grey:
- 144,144,144 (rgb);
- 0,0,0,44 (cmyk);
- #909090 (html),

*or it is multiplied over background, with alpha transparency:
- 0,0,0,111 (rgba);
- 0,0,0,100,44 (cmyk);
- #0000006f (html).

The white version may as well be declined in opaque or transparent, then green is replaced with translucent white:
- 255,255,255,111 (rgba);
- 0,0,0,0,44 (cmyk);
