AVIRIS Hyperspectral Sensor
Introduction
AVIRIS is an acronym for the Airborne Visible InfraRed Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS Main page).
Its optical sensor creates calibrated images of the upwelling spectral radiance in 224 contiguous spectral channels/bands with wavelengths from 400 to 2500 nanometers (nm).
Airplanes
AVIRIS has been flown on four aircraft platforms:
- NASA's ER-2 jet
- Twin Otter International's turboprop
- Scaled Composites' Proteus
- NASA's WB-57.
Flight details:
- The ER-2 flies at approximately 20km above sea level, at about 730 km/hr.
- The Twin Otter aircraft flies at 4km above ground level at 130km/hr.
Data Download
Downloading data from AVIRIS flights is straightforward using the AVIRIS Data Portal.
Import AVIRIS in GRASS
Data Downloaded
AVIRIS is downloaded as a .tar.gz file (i.e. f180116t01p00r07.tar.gz) uncompressing as a directory (i.e. f180116t01p00r07rdn_e/) containing with a set files like this:
