'''Q:''' ERROR: Default region not set
'''Q:''' ERROR: region for current mapset is not set

'''A:''' This error means there is no region presently defined. (A definition of "region" is needed...) The obvious method, using "d.region", offers no way to alter the default and any changes will fail with an error that there is no default region. You must create a new map and define a region, even if the range is 0-1. Then new regions can be defined.
'''A:'''
Means the WIND file in the working mapset is not accessible - missing, or the user has no sufficient rights to access it. If it is missing, the user can easily create a new WIND file for the current mapset - using g.region, or edit it manually with his favorite text editor. Note that the file in question should always be created automatically when a new mapset is set up, so the error might mean something went wrong when setting up the mapset, or it got corrupted later.

'''Q:''' ERROR: default region is not set

'''A:''' Means there is no default region defined for the working location. This indicates, that the DEFAULT_WIND file in the PERMANENT mapset of the working location is not accessible - missing, or the user has no sufficient rights to access it. Note that the file in question should always be created automatically when a new location is set up, so the error might mean something went wrong when setting up the location, or it got corrupted later.
