Q: ERROR: region for current mapset is not set

A: Means the WIND file in the working mapset is not accessible - missing, or the user has no sufficient rights to access it. If it is missing, the user can easily create a new WIND file for the current mapset - using g.region, or edit it manually with his favorite text editor. Note that the file in question should always be created automatically when a new mapset is set up, so the error might mean something went wrong when setting up the mapset, or it got corrupted later.

Q: ERROR: default region is not set

A: Means there is no default region defined for the working location. This indicates, that the DEFAULT_WIND file in the PERMANENT mapset of the working location is not accessible - missing, or the user has no sufficient rights to access it. Note that the file in question should always be created automatically when a new location is set up, so the error might mean something went wrong when setting up the location, or it got corrupted later.
