Screenshot demonstrating the v.surf.icw module.

This is an interpolation of sea water surface salinity in Chalky and Preservation Inlets, Fiordland, New Zealand. Markers indicate CTD sampling stations where data was collected. Due to "The Narrows" constriction at the entrance to Long Sound the water upstream of that is much fresher. Note the land bridge between the fresh Long Sound and the oceanic Isthmus Bay is only about 100m.

A post-processing mask is applied to limit the interpolation to within 3km of an actual sampling station.

This screenshot is actually a r.series average of two v.surf.icw runs, one with a coefficient of friction of 2, the other 3. This gives a nice compromise between smoothing and minimizing unconstrained boundary effects.
